Main task: first draft reflection

What went well:

  • I have become far more comfortable with filming in general, especially with interviews.
  • I have improved my interviewer/ interviewee rapport.
  • I have become more adaptable when finding both locations to film interviews and film extra footage.
  • I have found new outlets, websites and resources for research independently, and through my interviewees.
  • Become more fluid when editing as well as being able to adapt footage and alter certain sections so they work better with a sequence (I learnt how to change audio grain).
  • I have a large body of footage, which is always better than having too little.

What to work on:
  • When filming a shot, be sure to take at least 10 seconds of footage of the a STEADY SHOT, even though you have 20 seconds of the shots, DOESN’T MEAN ITS STEADY.
  • Range of angles when filming the same shot.

What to add over the next few drafts:
  • Audio/ sound track
  • Voice over and to the camera interview (of me) explaining what the documentary is about, and what direction it is going to take, this will give more context to the cutaways and extra footage of the students.
  • Transitions, there are many, many pints in my interviews where I had to edit out pauses and ‘umms’, because of this I will have to add transitions to ensure that they flow smoothly in the sequence.
  • More cutaways of school environment, especially for the ‘anonymous’ interview, as it would be very visually boring to not have anything else on screen to look at.
  • More research, facts and statistics backing up points made in the documentary, illustrate a solid argument without appearing completely biased.
